The science test on Rocks and Minerals will be on Monday November 19th. Here is the study guide for the students. They have each recieved a copy of it.
Rocks and Minerals Study Guide
-Types of Rocks – Igneous, Sedimentary, Metamorphic
-How they were formed and what they are used for
-Volcanoes – active, dormant, how they are formed and erupt, terms – magma chamber, lava, magma, geyser, composite, fissure
-Layers of the earth – inner core – iron, squeezed together by other layers, outer core – liquid iron, mantle – is always moving, crust – prevents us from falling in, rocky
-Properties to describe an object – colour, size, shape, texture (how an object feels – rough, bumpy, smooth), luster (how it reflects light, glassy, metallic)
-Cookies – rocks are different – erosion (water, wind, heat)
-Rocks are made from minerals
-Hardness – Moh’s scale – use of penny, fingernail, nail, paperclip
-Diamond is the hardest
-Pumice is the only rock that floats,
-Geologist –someone who studies rocks
-Volcanologist – someone who studies volcanoes
-Earthquakes – tectonic plates – part of the rocky crust, when they rub together they make an earthquake
-All soil is different.
-Fossils are rocks with an object or impression in it.
